Artist's Comments

An illustration for the Brother's Grimm fairytale, Cat-Skin - read it, if you dare!

I had to keep this under wraps for a bit because it was for a contest with anonymous entries. But that's all done now, so here it is :)

edit: Thanks so much for all the comments! I really appreciate it!

It's a disturbing little story, isn't it? I had the same problem when I first read it: I thought she'd married her pervert dad! Then I realized she'd married some other king and everything was okay :)

Also, I'm in no way condoning or supporting the fur industry - it's just part of the story.

I made a little step-by-step. Not really a tutorial, because there's not much to learn from it. But you can see it here: [link]

Cat-Skin by ~bluefooted is an outstanding illustration. Beautiful use of textures and colors really make for an interesting blend of materials, the artwork almost has a traditional feel to it! A very unique style by a very talented artist! (Featured by `cosmosue)

awesome illustration - "awe-some" also in the old-fashioned sense, you know, being kind of terrible and fascinating at the same time. *shiver* That is a very scary coat!

well done!

you've handled the colors so beautifully. the subtlety and how dim it is in some places, but in others so bright. it really has the air of a Grimm story, and of that era too. i thought of Klimt also, with the bright yellows and golds next to more flat shades. this really is gorgeous.

awesome, dreamy image.
i specially like how the creatures merge with each other and it all forms one big pile of fur.

im trying to really bring something useful with my comment here and the only thing i can make a crit of is the way you took her out of that dark background. Her head is not being unified with the darkness in that obscure corner in the bg of the piece, although im almost sure it could be just a style thing, i wanted to asked you if you had any other reason to do it like that?

besides that question im really enjoying this piece and the rest at the girl thunderdome.
cant get enough of your stuff.

cheers!

You are wonderful! Such amazing detail, and you never fail to make a superb bigger picture.

I love how you drew her :0 but this animal skin's really creepy... great work though!

What an interesting piece. As usual, the amount of detail in this drawing is amazing, not only the obvious details such as the cats and the girl's dress, but also the smaller ones, such as the way you drew out every brick in the archway, and added such tiny details in her hairclip.

The so-called 'obvious' details are absolutely amazing too, however. It must have taken you forever and a day to draw all those cats and the patterns on their coats! The texture on the girl's dress looks nice as well; it's very interesting. I also like how the bright colours of the dress contrast with the more subdued colours of the background and cats.

I also find the girl's expression to be very interesting. Her body language suggests that she is very comfortable in her position, with the way she so casually holds her coat. However, upon closer inspection, one sees what appears to be a teardrop on her cheek.

Overall, this is amazing work. :+fav: Just out of curiosity, how long did it take to draw and colour?
