Artist's Comments

An illustration for the Brother's Grimm fairytale, Cat-Skin - read it, if you dare!

I had to keep this under wraps for a bit because it was for a contest with anonymous entries. But that's all done now, so here it is :)

edit: Thanks so much for all the comments! I really appreciate it!

It's a disturbing little story, isn't it? I had the same problem when I first read it: I thought she'd married her pervert dad! Then I realized she'd married some other king and everything was okay :)

Also, I'm in no way condoning or supporting the fur industry - it's just part of the story.

I made a little step-by-step. Not really a tutorial, because there's not much to learn from it. But you can see it here: [link]

Cat-Skin by ~bluefooted is an outstanding illustration. Beautiful use of textures and colors really make for an interesting blend of materials, the artwork almost has a traditional feel to it! A very unique style by a very talented artist! (Featured by `cosmosue)

Gorgeous! Reminds me very much of Rackham's illustrations!

Oh god this is so good it makes me sick. One of my favorite fairytales just illuminated with a sparkling style. You have managed to understand how old world illustrators put pieces together and represented it in your own unique way. Your color sense as always is astonishing and I think this is the current crowning achievment of all the improvement I've seen in your work over the years.

I WILL be getting a print of this. Thank you for offering them.

Wonderful, wonderful textures in this- I love that the composition holds up as a whole in terms of shapes and value, but then has tons of detail to keep the eye busy. A joy to look at. :)

Wow! That is so beautiful and eerie. I haven’t read that particular fairytale. I keep reading fairytales, but there are always more. I guess that’s what’s so fun about them! It certainly looks like an interesting one.
I really love how your piece looks like one of those old, classic fairytale illustrations. It also has a sort of art deco feel to it. It’s really quite breathtaking!
