It feels like you used ancient Phoenician art as a reference for the armor (looking at the feathery shape of the scales), which gives a nice juxtoposition to the polar theme; though there's a very Norse feel overall thanks to your use of circular motifs in conjunction with with the interlacing border design.
I always appreciate when I see new and innovative mash-ups of traditional motifs. It gives a very solid feeling to heirloomish-looking clothing/armor/weapons. Good work.
One small cristiscism? I feel like there's a flatness across the bear's back that doesn't really seem anatomically correct, caused by the straight lines of the edges of the armor. I'm no expert on Polar Bear anatomy, but it seems like there ought to be more bulk there.
Yup. This would be a royal pain in the ass to fix, so I don't really expect it to get done-- just a note for future pieces.
wow, you did a great job - especially since you havnt read the book, I think I would have done the armour a lot rougher and more like raw iron, but either way this is a fabulous illustration

I'm contemplating the His Dark Materials books sitting on my shelf, unread, a bit more seriously.
